Easton Utilities CEO Takes Responsibility for Fuel Spill Impacting Birds
Easton Utilities CEO John Horner reported at a town meeting that a fuel spill at Bay Street Ponds resulted in the death of seven birds. The spill, initially estimated at 10-15 gallons, was caused by a valve malfunction during generator operation.
Horner took responsibility for the incident, stating that Maryland regulations were not followed as the Department of the Environment was not notified. Initial containment measures were implemented, but the situation escalated after residents reported affected wildlife.
Remediation efforts included installing absorbent barriers and contacting BP Environmental for support. An internal investigation is in progress to identify errors and improve future response strategies.
