Energy Communities Forming in Latvia to Share Surplus Electricity
Energy communities in Latvia aim to share surplus electricity among members rather than feeding it into the power grid. Currently, three communities are registered, including one in Kalniena, founded by local entrepreneur Aivars Zelčs. The Ministry of Climate and Energy has established a support program with €9.2 million available for projects, primarily for solar panels and heat pumps, with co-financing of up to 70%. The model is still being refined, focusing on community investment rather than profit generation.

Energy communities are emerging in Latvia, focusing on sharing surplus electricity locally instead of sending it to the general power grid. Three communities are registered, with one notable example in Kalniena, initiated by entrepreneur Aivars Zelčs.
This community consists of six members and aims to implement shared solar panels within two years. The Ministry of Climate and Energy has allocated €9.2 million for such projects, supporting installations of solar panels and heat pumps with a co-financing cap of 70%. The operational model emphasizes community benefit over profit generation.
