Environment Agency Completes 10,000 Water Network Inspections in Record Year
The Environment Agency has conducted over 10,000 inspections of water company assets, identifying 3,000 permit breaches. This initiative aims to enhance compliance and performance across the water sector, ensuring better environmental protection through preventative measures and stricter regulations.

The Environment Agency has completed over 10,000 inspections of water company assets in the past year, marking a significant increase from 4,600 in 2024/25. The inspections revealed over 3,000 permit condition breaches, resulting in 3,000 demands for improvements including repairs and infrastructure upgrades.
A record enforcement workforce of 500 additional staff has bolstered regulatory scrutiny, contributing to a decrease in issues found during site visits (22% down from 25%). This enhanced oversight aims to prevent water pollution and ensure compliance with environmental standards through the Water (Special Measures) Act and the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP). As companies implement Pollution Incident Reduction Plans by April 1, the long-term goal is to achieve sustainable water management and accountability across the sector.
