Environmental Groups Challenge EPA's Approval of West Virginia Carbon Sequestration Oversight
Environmental groups, including the Sierra Club and the West Virginia Surface Owners' Rights Organization, have filed a lawsuit against the EPA's approval of West Virginia's oversight of carbon sequestration wells, citing concerns over the state's past mismanagement of oil and gas wells. The challenge, submitted to the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, argues that the EPA failed to adequately consider this history when granting regulatory authority for the carbon storage program.

Environmental groups, including the Sierra Club and West Virginia Surface Owners' Rights Organization, have filed a legal challenge against the EPA's decision to grant West Virginia primary oversight of carbon sequestration wells. The lawsuit, submitted to the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, claims the EPA overlooked evidence of West Virginia's previous mismanagement of oil and gas wells when assigning regulatory authority for the carbon sequestration program. These wells are intended for the long-term storage of carbon dioxide emissions from industrial sources.
