Environmental NGOs Urge EU Leaders to Halt Deregulation Ahead of Council Meeting
Five leading environmental organizations have warned EU Heads of State that the push for deregulation threatens Europe's Single Market, competitiveness, security, and public health. They express concerns over the potential weakening of climate legislation, including the EU Emissions Trading System. The NGOs emphasize that enforcing existing environmental laws could generate significant economic savings, while the cost of inaction could reach €5.6 trillion over 30 years. They call for immediate action to ensure a stable, clean energy transition.

Five major environmental NGOs, including BirdLife Europe and WWF, have urged EU leaders to stop the deregulation agenda, warning it risks undermining the Single Market and Europe’s competitiveness. They cite concerns over the dilution of the EU Emissions Trading System, which could destabilize the carbon market and hinder climate goals.
The NGOs argue that enforcing current environmental laws could save €180 billion annually, while climate inaction may cost €5.6 trillion over 30 years. They call for swift action to protect public health and ensure a stable green transition amidst rising energy costs linked to Middle Eastern tensions.
