EPA Approves Wastewater Disposal Permit for Montana Renewables Biorefinery
Montana Renewables has received EPA approval to dispose of wastewater at sites in Pondera County, allowing up to 232,000 gallons per day. The decision follows nearly three years of evaluation and local opposition, with potential appeals from county officials.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency granted Montana Renewables a permit on May 1 to dispose of wastewater at two oil wells in Pondera County, which could accommodate up to 232,000 gallons daily. This new disposal method reduces reliance on out-of-state sites, notably Idaho.
The wells, previously used for oil and gas wastewater, are located over 3,400 feet deep in the Madison Aquifer, deemed not a valuable source for drinking water. Local officials are considering an appeal against the EPA’s decision due to concerns about long-term environmental impacts.
Montana Renewables is expanding its biorefinery, funded by a $1.6 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy, and plans to construct an on-site wastewater treatment facility. The timeline for this facility's completion remains unclear, as the company has yet to commence construction.
