EPA Drafts Class VI Permit for Colorado CO2 Storage Project by Carbon Storage Solutions LLC
The EPA has issued a draft Class VI permit for Carbon Storage Solutions LLC's CO2 storage project in Weld County, Colorado, enabling operation of the Front Range 1-1 injection well for geologic sequestration of CO2. The well is proposed to inject CO2 into the Lyons Formation at depths of 8,876 to 8,958 feet.
The permit includes monitoring, reporting, and operational requirements to protect underground sources of drinking water. Additionally, the EPA is reviewing a waiver application that would allow CO2 storage above the deepest drinking water source, pending regulatory safeguards. The public comment period is open for stakeholders to provide feedback on the draft permit and waiver request.
