EQUIFy Project Tests Autonomous Monitoring for Floating Offshore Wind Ecosystems
The EQUIFy project successfully tested an autonomous monitoring system using the PML Pioneer USV to enhance environmental data collection for floating offshore wind. The EQUIFy project has conducted trials of an autonomous monitoring system utilizing the PML Pioneer USV, aimed at generating environmental data for floating offshore wind developments. The project, involving multiple partners including Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the University of Plymouth, seeks to develop a framework for assessing ecosystem changes linked to offshore wind expansion.
The trial in Smart Sound Plymouth integrated meteorological and oceanographic data along with environmental DNA sampling. The initiative is supported by the Natural Environment Research Council and The Crown Estate, addressing knowledge gaps in the environmental impact of floating offshore wind systems.
Data from the trial will enhance integrated ecosystem assessments and inform regulatory and industry decision-making processes. As the sector expands, robust monitoring systems are necessary to address cumulative environmental impacts and support sustainable growth.
