EU Allocates €5 Million to Enhance Togo's Maritime Security
The European Union has committed €5 million to improve Togo's naval capabilities, enhancing its ability to safeguard its exclusive economic zone and participate in anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Guinea. This funding is part of a broader €15 million EU support package aimed at strengthening maritime security and combating regional threats, particularly piracy and terrorism.

The European Union has allocated €5 million through the European Peace Facility (EPF) to bolster Togo's naval capabilities, enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. This funding is part of a total EU support of €15 million, aimed at improving surveillance and communication systems within the Togolese Navy.
The assistance comes amid rising maritime piracy and Islamist insurgencies in the region, necessitating a focus on both naval and counter-terrorism efforts. Togo's military modernization is hindered by fiscal constraints despite recent investments, including a $1.3 billion defense budget over five years. The EPF, established in 2021, reflects the EU's strategy to address regional security challenges and supports other countries like Egypt and Senegal in similar efforts.
