EU Electrification Action Plan Targets 46% Energy Consumption from Electricity by 2040
The European Union aims for electricity to comprise 46% of total energy consumption by 2040, doubling its current share. This plan addresses energy security concerns heightened by geopolitical tensions and could reduce fossil fuel import costs by €260 billion annually.

The EU has introduced the Electrification Action Plan, targeting a rise in electricity's share of total energy consumption to 46% by 2040. Currently, electricity accounts for approximately 23% of the bloc's final energy use.
The strategy aims to transition sectors like transportation and heating to renewable electric solutions, driven by the goal to cut reliance on imported oil and gas. However, challenges exist, including a high electricity-to-gas price ratio exceeding 3.0x, which hinders electrification efforts.
Concurrently, the EU is reforming its Emissions Trading System (ETS), facing tensions between industrial interests and climate goals. These reforms may introduce greater flexibility for industries while pushing for decarbonization investments.
