EU Grant for Kingston University to Transform Wastewater into Energy and Fertiliser
Kingston University receives an EU grant to lead research on converting wastewater into renewable resources. The CeSuds project aims to enhance wastewater treatment efficiency and reduce environmental impact through innovative technologies.
Kingston University has secured funding from the EU's Horizon Europe programme for the CeSuds initiative, which seeks to convert wastewater treatment plants into sustainable energy and fertiliser producers. The four-year project, commencing in September, will involve 14 doctoral candidates trained across 13 primary and associated partners from countries including Ireland, Italy, Poland, Austria, and Denmark.
Dr. Heba Ghazal will explore hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) methods to degrade micropollutants, optimizing conditions for effective wastewater treatment. This consortium will also utilize machine learning to enhance output quality predictions. The initiative addresses rising operational costs and stringent regulations in European wastewater management, potentially transforming sludge disposal methods.
