EU Grants Expert Support to Växjö Energi for Bio-CCS Project POSCLIMB

CARBON CAPTURE

Växjö Energi's bio-CCS project, POSCLIMB, has received expert support from the EU to enhance its carbon capture efforts. Launched in 2020, the project aims for negative carbon emissions by capturing and permanently storing biogenic CO2 from the Sandviksverket power plant, which operates solely on renewable biomass.

The project plans to capture and store up to 200,000 tons of CO2 annually, contributing to the Paris Agreement objectives. The captured CO2 will be transported via a combination of train and boat to a storage site in the North Sea, 3,000 meters below sea level, for mineralization.

Växjö's municipal council will decide in spring 2026 whether to proceed to the next phase, aiming for a permanent bio-CCS facility by 2028. The project has also received funding from the Swedish Energy Agency and will be supported by the European Investment Bank through the Innovation Fund.
