European Buyers Explore LNG Imports from Canada via Panama Canal
European energy buyers, including Uniper, are considering LNG imports from western Canada via the Panama Canal to diversify supply amid geopolitical tensions. The urgency has increased following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, prompting a reassessment of energy sourcing strategies.

European buyers are in discussions to import LNG from Canada's Ksi Lisims project, with a final investment decision expected this year. The project aims to secure contracts with buyers before construction, which may take several years, as Canadian LNG exports are currently more focused on Asian markets.
The costs associated with shipping through the Panama Canal could be higher, complicating the logistics for European delivery. Despite existing infrastructure challenges, geopolitical instability is motivating buyers to pursue Canadian gas as a stable alternative. The Canadian government is expediting project approvals to support the economy impacted by U.S. trade policies.
