Expansion of Data Centers in South Florida Amidst Rising AI Demand
Four data center projects are in development across South Florida, responding to a national trend of over 1,500 facilities being planned. The construction brings concerns from local residents regarding environmental impact, utility strain, and property values.

Four data center projects are currently underway in South Florida, including a 150,000-square-foot facility by Iron Mountain in Northeast Miami-Dade and a million-square-foot proposal by Project Tango in Palm Beach County. The pandemic and the rise of generative AI have significantly increased demand for data centers, with 120 existing facilities in Florida and eight more planned.
Local concerns include environmental impacts, noise from cooling systems, and potential strain on utility grids, particularly in the case of Project Tango, which requires rezoning. Despite these issues, proponents argue that data centers provide essential infrastructure and job creation, with Iron Mountain's Westview facility projected to add 30 jobs. Ongoing developments in energy efficiency may mitigate some environmental concerns over time.
