Expansion of Ndola Airport to Enhance Regional Cargo Capacity
NAC2000 is preparing for a potential 787 service at Ndola Airport, which could significantly boost cargo traffic in Zambia's Copperbelt. This development is critical as mining-related cargo volumes surge, driven by improved economic conditions and increased foreign investment.

NAC2000 is working with the operator of Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport (SMKIA) to facilitate a potential 787 service linking Ndola and Lubumbashi. This enhancement is expected to address the high demand for time-sensitive shipments, particularly for mining operations.
Currently, approximately 60% of cargo processed in Lusaka is destined for the Copperbelt and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Despite challenges such as low utilization of the new cargo terminal and inadequate infrastructure, stakeholders see opportunities due to rising mining output and agricultural exports.
Key airlines are showing interest, indicating a shift in the Copperbelt's role in regional cargo flows. To achieve hub status, coordinated and transparent stakeholder engagement is essential.
