Fairbanks North Star Borough Allocates $2.5 Million for Recycling Facility Scoping Project
The Fairbanks North Star Borough has approved a $2.5 million project to design a new recycling facility, aiming to replace the current site on Marika Road with a repurposed cold storage warehouse at the landfill. Funded through the Solid Waste Division's enterprise fund, the initiative seeks to enhance recycling efficiency and increase the borough's diversion rate, which currently stands at 0.7%, far below the target of 10%. This strategic shift focuses on optimizing existing infrastructure to align operational costs with recycling goals.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough has initiated a $2.5 million design and scoping project for a new recycling facility following the Assembly's unanimous approval. The project aims to replace the existing facility on Marika Road, with a proposal to repurpose a cold storage warehouse at the landfill on Easy Street.
Funding comes from the Solid Waste Division's enterprise fund, not taxpayer dollars. The borough currently leases the Central Recycling Facility for $124,000 annually, which is limited in capacity and functionality.
A larger facility would improve recycling efficiency and allow for automation, potentially increasing diversion rates from the landfill. The Assembly's approval reflects a shift in strategy, prioritizing the repurposing of existing infrastructure to align operational costs with recycling goals.
The borough's current diversion rate is 0.7%, well below the target of 10%. The project aims to enhance long-term sustainability and financial viability of recycling efforts.
