Finland Conducts First Automated Train Drive with Siemens Mobility Using ETCS and ATO Technologies
Finland has executed the Nordic region's first automated train operation integrating ETCS Level 2 and Automatic Train Operation (ATO) on a 19-kilometre stretch led by Siemens Mobility. The demonstration involved a VR-operated train and showcased precise automated stops and smooth operations. Fintraffic and Siemens signed an agreement in 2024 for a centralised safety system for the Digirata project's first commercial section, expected to open by 2029. The Digirata program aims to enhance rail safety and efficiency nationwide.

Finland has conducted its first automated train operation using ETCS Level 2 and ATO, covering a 19-kilometre distance between Juurikorpi and Hamina. Siemens Mobility led the demonstration, achieving automated stops with 30 to 80 centimetre precision at speeds of 100 km/h.
The test, using a modernised train from VR, confirmed the system's stability. In 2024, Fintraffic and Siemens agreed to provide a centralised safety system for the Digirata project's Lielahti-Rauma/Pori section, with the project aiming for nationwide automation by 2030. The first commercial operation is scheduled for 2029, enhancing rail efficiency and safety.
