FS Logistix Initiates Smart Train Testing on Milan-Catania Route
FS Logistix has launched its first smart train for operational testing on the Milan-Catania Bicocca route, marking a pivotal advancement in rail freight transport. This initiative aims to enhance safety and efficiency through real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance technologies, potentially reshaping logistics management in the sector.

FS Logistix has commenced operational testing of its inaugural smart train along the Milan-Catania Bicocca route, driven by Mercitalia Intermodal in collaboration with Mercitalia Rail. The program incorporates real-time monitoring of critical parameters such as braking systems, load stability, and derailment detection, leveraging a wireless communication system linking wagon sensors with the driver.
The fleet modernization includes the deployment of the WaggonTracker digital system and the planned addition of 180 more smart wagons by 2025, increasing the total to approximately 700 digitalized units. This advancement aims to enhance service reliability, reduce train preparation times, and implement predictive maintenance strategies, ultimately improving the efficiency of rail logistics operations.
