German Researchers Develop AI Drones and Robots to Detect Radioactive Waste
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany have developed AI-driven drones and robots to identify radioactive waste in hazardous environments inaccessible to humans. This project combines uncrewed aerial and ground vehicles with advanced sensor fusion and automation techniques to improve detection efficiency.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE) in Germany have created AI-powered drones and robots designed to detect radioactive waste in hazardous areas unsafe for human access. The project integrates uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) and uncrewed ground vehicles (UGV) with advanced sensor fusion, automation, and probabilistic search algorithms to enhance detection capabilities.
