Germany Advances Quantum Repeater Project for Future Internet
Germany initiates a €12.4m project, TD.QR, to develop quantum repeater technology essential for a scalable quantum internet. The initiative aims to address long-distance transmission challenges in quantum communication, contributing to cybersecurity advancements and infrastructure development by 2028.

The TD.QR initiative, launched in January 2026 with nearly €12.4m in funding, aims to refine quantum repeater technologies necessary for scalable quantum networks. The project will run for 14 months and focus on testing quantum repeater links in real-world settings, moving beyond controlled laboratory environments.
Key components include the development of mobile quantum nodes and optimizing entanglement generation across different memory platforms. With a milestone of demonstrating viable quantum repeater systems by 2028, TD.QR seeks to bridge theoretical advances with practical applications, potentially accelerating the transition to secure quantum networks and impacting cybersecurity and distributed quantum computing.
