Germany Can Achieve Net-Zero by 2045 with Rapid Scaling of Carbon Dioxide Removal, Says Carbon Gap & Sweco Report

CARBON CAPTURE

The Carbon Gap and Sweco report indicates that Germany can achieve net-zero emissions by 2045 if carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is scaled rapidly. The Germany Carbon Removal Readiness Assessment (CRRA) emphasizes the need for strong policies and infrastructure development.

High-ambition pathways could allow Germany to offset a significant portion of its residual emissions, while a low-ambition approach could result in only 47 MtCO2 of removals. The report advocates for a diverse mix of CDR strategies, including biochar and afforestation.

Infrastructure for carbon transport and geological CO2 capacity are key challenges. Coordinated investment in pipelines and regulations are also necessary for CDR sector growth.
