Gevo Subsidiary Signs Major Carbon Dioxide Removal Agreement, Projected to Generate $26 Million in Revenue
Gevo Inc. has made a significant stride in the realm of carbon management, with its subsidiary, Net Zero Richardton LLC, recently finalizing a noteworthy agreement with Biorecro North America LLC. This partnership aims to commercialize carbon dioxide removal credits generated at Gevo's North Dakota facility, projecting an impressive revenue of approximately $26 million over the next five years. The agreement, which focuses on voluntary credits, underscores the growing demand for reliable carbon abatement solutions in a market increasingly concerned with sustainability.
Dr. Paul D. Bloom, Gevo's Chief Business Officer, expressed optimism about the deal, highlighting the stability it brings amidst the volatility of biofuel markets. The collaboration with Biorecro not only fulfills immediate operational needs for companies facing challenging emissions targets but also enhances Gevo's position as a leader in providing durable carbon removal credits certified by Puro Earth.
Henrik Karlsson, the founder and CEO of Biorecro, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of their expertise in the bioenergy sector and the potential for growth in carbon capture and storage (BECCS). The Gevo North Dakota site, operational since 2022, has already been pivotal, certifying the storage of up to 165,000 tons of CO2 annually. With a geological formation suited for carbon capture and a Class VI well for secure storage, the facility is equipped to scale up to 1 million tons per year.
The carbon removal credits generated at this facility, known as CORCs, are not only ready for immediate use but also adhere to rigorous standards ensuring their permanence for over a millennium. This level of certification addresses the growing need for high-quality carbon credits, allowing clients to manage their emissions effectively.
Gevo's acquisition of the North Dakota assets, previously operated by Red Trail Energy LLC, has positioned the company to capture biogenic CO2 generated alongside protein feed and fuel production. This dual capability not only enhances the value of the stored CO2 but also opens pathways for various industrial applications, including food and beverage production, and enhanced oil recovery.
Alex Clayton, Gevo's Chief Business Development Officer, expressed enthusiasm about this initial agreement and the potential for future projects. The collaboration with Biorecro offers a robust supply of CORCs, instilling confidence in global customers regarding the integrity and validation of Gevo's carbon abatement initiatives. As the need for sustainable solutions intensifies, Gevo's forward-thinking approach in the carbon removal sector promises to deliver significant environmental and economic benefits.
