Groundswell Collective Plants First Tiny Forest in Cook Islands to Enhance Biodiversity

The Groundswell Collective has initiated its first tiny forest project in the Cook Islands to combat biodiversity loss and environmental challenges. Tiny forests, small patches of native trees, are designed to regenerate land and provide various ecological and social benefits.

Since 2023, the group has established 19 such forests, including one at Cedar Brush Creek that thrived after flooding. The project, inspired by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki's techniques, aims to improve urban environments by reducing heat, mitigating floods, and enhancing carbon capture.

In November 2024, volunteers planted 600 native trees in a 200 square meter area, which will support local ecosystems and stabilize freshwater systems. The initiative aligns with traditional Rarotongan practices and reflects a commitment to sustainability, evidenced by the collective winning the Biodiversity prize at the NSW Banksia Awards.
