Hampton Ponds Association Requests City of Westfield to Reverse Decision on Sewer Pump Maintenance
Susan McFarlin, president of the Hampton Ponds Association, has requested the Water Commission to rescind its Nov. 10 decision to cease maintenance of sewer grinder pumps, which the city has maintained for 25 years. Residents were unaware of the discussions leading to this decision. A meeting is scheduled for Feb. 12 to address the matter. The city maintained that homeowners were responsible for pump maintenance according to an original contract, while residents argue the need for city support due to the pumps' reliability issues.

The Hampton Ponds Association, led by president Susan McFarlin, is asking the Water Commission of Westfield to rescind a decision made on Nov. 10 to stop maintaining sewer grinder pumps by June 30, 2026. Residents were notified of the decision via certified letters in December, stating that maintenance costs would shift to homeowners after that date.
The pumps were installed in the 1990s as part of a city initiative to connect homes to the sewer system. The association claims the city agreed to cover maintenance costs, highlighting their dependency on the pumps for sewer access. A meeting is scheduled for Feb. 12 to discuss the residents' concerns, while city officials maintain that homeowners were responsible for pump upkeep based on original agreements.
