Hawke Bay Initiates $12 Million Wastewater Pump Replacement Project
Hawke Bay Regional Council has launched a $12 million initiative to replace outdated wastewater pumps, essential for effective wastewater management. Scheduled to begin in January 2024, this project aims to enhance the reliability of services for over 100,000 residents and align with national infrastructure modernization efforts.

A $12 million project to replace aging wastewater pumps in Hawke Bay is set to commence in January 2024. The current pumps, installed in the 1980s, have been identified as high-risk due to their deteriorating condition, which threatens the integrity of wastewater treatment services.
The project will replace six submersible pumps within a 2.75-kilometer pipeline that discharges treated effluent into the Hawke River. The upgrade will enhance flow capacity and efficiency, in partnership with local firm Aquatech Solutions, and is supported by grants and operational funds.
This move is part of broader efforts to modernize critical wastewater infrastructure, as over 40% of New Zealand's facilities are outdated. Similar initiatives are being undertaken in Wellington and Christchurch, highlighting a national trend toward urgent wastewater system upgrades.
