Heidelberg Materials Develops CCS Technology at Brevik Cement Plant in Norway
Heidelberg Materials has launched the world's first large-scale carbon capture facility at its Brevik cement plant in Norway, capable of capturing 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually for storage under the North Sea. The €400 million project, supported by Norway’s Longship climate initiative, aims to reduce the cement industry's significant contribution to global CO₂ emissions. Additionally, the company plans to build a second CCS plant in Wales, targeting an annual capture of 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ by 2029.

Heidelberg Materials has established the world's first large-scale carbon capture facility at its Brevik cement plant in Norway, capturing 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually for storage under the North Sea. The project, costing around 400 million euros, is supported by Norway’s Longship climate initiative.
It aims to make cement production more environmentally friendly, addressing the 8% of global CO₂ emissions attributed to cement. The company plans to construct a second CCS plant in Wales, expected to capture 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually starting in 2029.
