Henrico Facility Penalized Over $53,600 for Ethylene Oxide Release
Sterilization Services of Virginia faces penalties exceeding $53,600 due to a hazardous release of ethylene oxide. The incident involved nearly 600 pounds of the chemical, prompting state regulatory actions under environmental law.

Sterilization Services of Virginia will pay $53,616.75 following a consent order due to a release of 580 pounds of ethylene oxide on April 9. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality identified multiple violations, including failure to report the startup of pollution controls and an uncontrolled release caused by a faulty valve.
The facility delayed notifying regulators about the operation of its pollution-control system by 147 days. Measures have been proposed to prevent future incidents, including installing alarms and routine pressure testing. The penalties highlight ongoing concerns regarding ethylene oxide emissions linked to potential health risks.
