Huron County Battery Storage Project Approved Amid Development Moratorium Considerations
The Michigan Public Service Commission approved a 20-year agreement for the Big Mitten Energy Center in Huron County, part of DTE Electric's initiative to enhance energy storage capacity. This development occurs alongside local considerations for a moratorium on large-scale data centers amidst community concerns about environmental impact and infrastructure.

The Big Mitten Energy Center in Huron County has received state approval, contributing to a total of six energy storage projects statewide, amounting to 1,332 megawatts. These are part of DTE Electric's integrated resource plan, fulfilling a requirement for 850 MW of energy storage.
The county officials are contemplating a six-month moratorium on data centers, which coincides with increased scrutiny on energy-intensive developments. Concerns from residents about environmental impacts and fire safety at such facilities have been raised, emphasizing the need for careful regulatory oversight. The upcoming public hearing on April 1 will address these issues and potential local economic effects.
