Hyundai-POSCO Invests in New Steel Mill with SMS Group Technology in Louisiana
Hyundai Steel and POSCO are investing billions in a new steel plant in Louisiana, set to begin operations in 2029. This facility will produce automotive-grade steel, with a capacity of 2.8 million tons of hot-rolled and 2 million tons of cold-rolled steel annually, leveraging advanced SMS group technology.
Hyundai-POSCO Louisiana Steel LLC has commissioned SMS group for rolling mills in a new plant in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. The facility will commence operations in 2029 and will have a combined capacity of 4.8 million tons for hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel.
The hot strip mill and tandem cold mill will feature innovative automation for enhanced performance. The pickling line is designed to recover hydrochloric acid, promoting sustainability with minimal wastewater.
The plant aims to supply high-quality automotive steel to major US automakers, including Hyundai Motor Group. The integration of advanced technologies may lead to operational efficiencies and increased competitiveness in the automotive steel market.
