IAEA Identifies Key Small Modular Reactor Projects for 2024
The IAEA has cataloged 15 leading Small Modular Reactor (SMR) projects, with two operational, four under construction, and nine in advanced licensing. This focus on active developments reflects a shift from previous listings, emphasizing progress and safety in SMR technology, which is crucial for the future of nuclear power deployment.

The IAEA catalog currently lists 15 significant SMR projects, including two operational reactors: Russia's Akademik Lomonosov and China's HTR-PM. Four reactors are under construction, including China's ACP100 and Russia's BREST-OD-300, with expected operational dates ranging from 2026 to 2030.
Nine additional projects are in advanced licensing stages, such as GE Hitachi's BWRX-300 and NuScale's VOYGR. Notably, the U.S. Department of Energy's Reactor Pilot Program includes 11 fast-tracked projects, but only one is in the IAEA catalog.
The trend towards integral designs, like the iPWRs, enhances safety but raises construction complexity. The developments signal a stronger commitment to advancing nuclear technology and addressing global energy demands.
