IISc's FSID Incubator Supports Long-Term Deep Tech Startups in India
The Indian Institute of Science's FSID incubator promotes a slow-growth model for startups in deep tech, enabling firms like Bellatrix Aerospace and Digantara to thrive. This approach contrasts with the rapid timelines often expected in the startup ecosystem, allowing for the development of complex technologies over extended periods.

The Foundation for Science Innovation and Development (FSID) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has incubated over 140 startups focused on deep science, emphasizing that significant technological advancements require time. Notable successes include Bellatrix Aerospace, which secured an order from ISRO and became the first private Indian firm to space-qualify a green propellant, and Digantara, which has grown to 170 employees and raised over $65 million while focusing on space domain awareness.
Other startups in FSID's portfolio, such as Azooka Labs and Agnit Semiconductors, have transformed university research into commercial products. FSID's model allows startups to access lab space, funding, and mentorship, fostering an environment conducive to innovation without the pressure of rapid commercialization.
