IIT Bombay and NTPC Complete India's First Geological CO2 Storage Well in Jharkhand
IIT Bombay and NTPC have completed drilling India's first geological well for testing CO2 storage in sedimentary formations, marking an advancement in carbon capture technology. Launched in November 2022 under NITI Aayog, the collaboration produced the first geological storage atlas for assessing CO2 storage in four major coalfields.
The well, located in Pakri Barwadih, Jharkhand, reached a depth of 1,200 meters and was completed on November 15, 2025; a second well drilling commenced on December 21, 2025. The project aims to assess feasibility and risk for full-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) development, with preliminary studies indicating the North Karanpura coalfield could store up to 15.5 million tonnes of CO2 over ten years. This initiative supports India's net-zero commitments and enhances CCUS technologies across various sectors.
