The NASA Standard Initiator (NSI), developed in Downers Grove, Illinois, has been pivotal in space missions including Artemis II, Mars lander, and Atlas satellites. Chemring Energetic Devices, the sole qualified manufacturer for NSI initiators for NASA, produces 80 units for each space launch.
Recently awarded 'Coolest Thing Made in Illinois' in the 2026 Makers Madness contest, the NSI was selected from over 100 products after 167,000 votes. Chemring also collaborates with SpaceX, Blue Origin, and United Launch Alliance.
The NSI's reliability stems from its origins in the ordnance business, emphasizing safety and functionality in high-stakes environments. This recognition underscores Illinois' role in the aerospace sector.
