Incheon City to Secure Carbon Credits Through Blue Carbon Utilizing Marine Resources
Incheon Metropolitan City aims to secure carbon credits by utilizing blue carbon from its extensive tidal flats and marine resources. The Fisheries Resources Research Institute has been conducting research on seagrasses and saltmarshes to develop carbon reduction measures since 2005. The city plans to participate in a Korea-US joint project for seaweed biomass production, receiving KRW 41 billion over five years. The emphasis on blue carbon aligns with national goals for greenhouse gas reductions by 2030.

Incheon City is positioned to secure carbon credits through blue carbon, leveraging its tidal flats, which represent 28.2% of Korea's total. The Fisheries Resources Research Institute has been researching seagrasses since 2005 and has initiated pilot transplants since 2021.
The city is participating in a Korea-US joint project to develop seaweed biomass production, funded with KRW 41 billion from 2025 to 2030. This initiative supports national greenhouse gas reduction targets, emphasizing the significance of marine ecosystems in achieving a carbon-neutral society by 2050.
