India Initiates Coal Gasification Projects Worth ₹65,000 Crore
India's coal gasification initiative has commenced execution with projects exceeding ₹65,000 crore, supported by an ₹8,500 crore incentive scheme. This strategy aims to diversify coal use, enhance energy security, and stimulate industrial growth, targeting gasification of 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030.

India is advancing its coal gasification program with projects valued over ₹65,000 crore currently in implementation, backed by an ₹8,500 crore incentive scheme approved in January 2024. These initiatives encompass sectors such as acetic acid production, Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)-based steel, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
The government plans to gasify 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030, with five projects under development in Maharashtra, supported by strong coal availability from Western Coalfields Ltd. The initiative is expected to attract investments up to ₹3 lakh crore, reducing reliance on imported fuels and promoting domestic resource utilization. This shift could significantly impact India's energy landscape and industrial capabilities.
