India Joins Heavy-Haul Rail Operators, Pursues Global Tech for Freight Efficiency
India's entry into the heavy-haul freight railway sector aims to enhance logistics efficiency through advanced technologies. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) is seeking global expertise to reduce logistics costs, currently at 13-14% of GDP.

India has officially joined the ranks of countries operating heavy-haul freight railway systems, a move facilitated by the establishment of dedicated freight corridors. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) is focusing on integrating advanced technologies such as AI-based predictive maintenance and autonomous inspection solutions to improve operational efficiency and safety.
The Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors are expected to lower logistics costs, currently higher than the global average of 7-8% of GDP. DFCCIL is also set to lead the construction of a new East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor, spanning approximately 2,100 kilometers from Dankuni to Surat. This expansion is anticipated to enhance India's freight network and global competitiveness.
