India Semiconductor Mission 2.0: Addressing Ecosystem Weaknesses for Sustainable Growth
India's Semiconductor Mission 2.0 aims to enhance the semiconductor ecosystem through a focus on equipment, materials, and supply chains. The initiative seeks to transform project approvals into tangible outputs and sustainable manufacturing capacities.

The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0, announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, prioritizes the development of semiconductor equipment, materials, and supply chain integration. Analysts underscore the need for ISM 2.0 to address gaps that hinder the transition from project approvals to effective semiconductor manufacturing.
Despite the approval of 10 projects with a total investment of INR1.60 trillion (approx. US$16.6 billion) under ISM 1.0, actual manufacturing output remains minimal. The focus will shift towards enhancing capabilities in OSAT/ATMP, advanced packaging, and chip design.
Without a robust supplier base and infrastructure, India risks continued dependence on imports. By 2027-2028, success will rely on operational facilities and visible growth in domestic semiconductor capabilities.
