Inpex to Resubmit Environmental Plan for Bonaparte CCS Project in Australia
Inpex will resubmit its environmental plan for the Bonaparte Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project off Australia's north coast after new environmental laws are finalized. The project was withdrawn from public comment as Inpex awaits legislative amendments.
The Bonaparte CCS project aims to capture 8 million metric tons of carbon annually and gained major project status in July after preliminary engineering began in April. Inpex is consulting with Australia's environment department on the changes but has not set a specific timeline for resubmission to the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) portal.
The project has significant partnerships with TotalEnergies and Woodside Energy. Since 2022, Australia has awarded 15 offshore CCS permits and has two operational onshore CCS projects.
