Israeli Collision Avoidance System Aims to Enhance Aerial Firefighting Safety After Fatal Crash
An Israeli-developed collision avoidance system is being tested to prevent midair accidents in aerial firefighting. This initiative comes in response to increasing wildfires and the associated risks faced by aircraft in firefighting operations.

The recent collision of two firefighting helicopters near Athens, Greece, resulted in the deaths of two crew members, highlighting the dangers of aerial firefighting. An Israeli company, Ciconia, has created a decentralized collision avoidance system capable of transmitting flight data to improve situational awareness among aircraft operating in wildfire zones.
The system allows aircraft to independently construct a real-time air traffic picture and provides collision warnings with evasive maneuver instructions. Although tested by the Israeli Air Force, large-scale procurement remains unapproved nearly 30 years after a significant helicopter disaster in Israel. Ciconia is also part of a US initiative aimed at improving aerial firefighting, with demonstrations planned in Texas and California to evaluate system performance, potentially leading to broader adoption.
