Istanbul University Launches AI Project to Monitor Endangered Seagrass in Türkiye
Istanbul University has launched the Pasalimanı Island Harmanlı Bay Project to monitor endangered seagrass meadows, particularly Posidonia oceanica, along the Balıkesir coast in western Türkiye. Utilizing AI, satellite imagery, and drones, the initiative aims to address threats from rising sea temperatures and marine pollution, with data confirmed through underwater research. The project emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring for these vital ecosystems, which play a crucial role in carbon sequestration and supporting marine habitats.

Istanbul University has initiated the Pasalimanı Island Harmanlı Bay Project, using AI, satellite imagery, and drones to monitor endangered seagrass meadows along the Balıkesir coast in western Türkiye. The project addresses threats such as rising sea temperatures and marine pollution, with data verified by underwater research. Seagrass meadows, particularly Posidonia oceanica, are vital for carbon sequestration and marine habitats, but their slow growth necessitates continuous monitoring to mitigate human impact.
