Italy Upgrades MATS MK2 Anti-Tank Mines for NATO Defense Collaboration
Italy, through a Memorandum of Understanding with Rheinmetall and AID signed on February 25, 2026, will upgrade hundreds of thousands of MATS MK2 anti-tank mines. The initiative focuses on joint development, testing, and production, enhancing operational relevance and safety standards. The upgrades aim to modernize existing stocks and improve their effectiveness against armored vehicles. The program aligns with NATO's broader strategy to enhance anti-mobility capabilities across its eastern flank.

Italy has initiated a significant upgrade of MATS MK2 anti-tank mines in collaboration with Rheinmetall and AID. The Memorandum of Understanding, signed on February 25, 2026, outlines plans for the joint development and production of upgraded mines, with several hundred thousand units to be converted.
Work is expected to commence within the next 12 months. The upgrades focus on enhancing safety, operational performance, and extending the life of existing stocks. The MATS MK2 mines are designed to immobilize armored vehicles, thereby improving battlefield mobility denial.
This effort is part of a broader NATO strategy to reinforce anti-mobility infrastructure, as seen in recent investments by other member states. For Italy, the upgraded mines will provide a cost-effective means of enhancing territorial defense and tactical operations.
