ITER Nuclear Fusion Project Achieves Two-Thirds Tokamak Assembly Milestone
The ITER nuclear fusion project has reached a critical construction milestone with six out of nine tokamak sector modules installed, achieving two-thirds completion ahead of schedule. This advancement supports ITER's goal of demonstrating sustainable fusion energy production, targeting operations for deuterium-deuterium fusion by 2035 and a fusion gain factor of Q≥10.

The ITER project, located in southern France, has successfully installed six of the nine tokamak sector modules as of July 28, 2026. This places two-thirds of the tokamak's core in position, with the sixth module weighing approximately 1,100 tonnes.
Future plans include installing the final module by 2027. The project consists of contributions from seven international members, emphasizing collaborative component supply. The revised Baseline 2024 strategy aims to enhance operational robustness and address technical challenges, shifting focus from the initial late 2025 plasma target.
As civil construction is nearly complete, machine assembly and subsystem commissioning have commenced, highlighting ITER's commitment to advancing fusion technology. The project's complexity underscores a major transition in nuclear energy development, contrasting with traditional fission approaches.
