Jamaica Allocates $776M for Southern Plains Agricultural Development Project

FLOW CONTROL

The Jamaican Government has allocated $776 million for the Southern Plains Agricultural Development (SPAD) project as part of the 2026/27 Estimates of Expenditure. The project aims to improve agricultural productivity through irrigation access on fallow sugar lands by constructing wells and a canal network in St Catherine and Clarendon.

As of December 2025, three wells have been drilled, and significant infrastructure has been established, including pump houses and irrigation systems. For the fiscal year 2026/27, funds will support the construction of agricultural buildings, road reinforcements, and procurement of drain cleaning equipment. The project's completion is expected in March 2028.
