Japan Contracts Three Upgraded Mogami-class Frigates for Enhanced Missile Capacity
Japan's Ministry of Defense has contracted Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for three upgraded Mogami-class frigates, valued at approximately $850 to $900 million. This order is part of a broader initiative to acquire 10 to 12 frigates during the fiscal years 2024 to 2028, indicating a shift in naval strategy and capabilities.

On February 16, 2026, Japan's Ministry of Defense signed a contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for three upgraded Mogami-class frigates, hulls three through five, totaling 128.6 billion yen. This contract follows a previous agreement for two ships in fiscal year 2025, under the New FFM program, which aims to replace the original plan of 22 hulls with 10 to 12 ships.
The average unit cost is 42.9 billion yen per frigate, significantly lower than the previous estimate of 104.9 billion yen per unit. The upgraded frigates will feature enhanced capabilities, with an increase in standard displacement to between 4,800 and 4,880 tons and a length of approximately 142 meters.
The separation of costs into distinct budget lines allows for better fiscal management and integration of evolving technologies. This procurement strategy reflects Japan's intention to adapt its naval fleet to new operational demands.
