JAXA Engages ispace for Lunar Debris Mitigation and Disposal Study

SPACE ECONOMY

Japan's JAXA has contracted ispace to study lunar debris mitigation and disposal as part of the Artemis Accords initiative. With increased lunar missions anticipated, the study aims to develop operational approaches for debris management and spacecraft disposal post-mission. ispace will leverage its experience from prior lunar missions to assess draft recommendations on debris mitigation, focusing on technical and operational feasibility for future lunar orbiters.

The analysis will inform JAXA's guidelines for sustainable practices in the cislunar economy, considering safe disposal methods and management of spent hardware. The results are expected to address implementation challenges and standardization opportunities among international partners.
