Jemena Advances Eastern Gas Pipeline to Enhance Australia's Gas Supply
Jemena is progressing with its Southern Gas Strategy to enhance gas supply to southeastern Australia by making the Eastern Gas Pipeline bidirectional. This initiative aims to address forecasted gas shortages in Victoria and New South Wales by increasing transportation capacity and flexibility in gas sourcing.

Jemena has completed modifications to its Eastern Gas Pipeline (EGP), allowing it to transport up to 200 TJ/d of new gas into Victoria while maintaining 350 TJ/d capability to New South Wales. The company plans to install a new compressor station at Wilton to fully reverse the pipeline, creating a new gas pathway from northern Australia to southeastern markets.
This project is aimed at preemptively addressing gas supply shortages, reducing reliance on costly infrastructure developments. With favorable investment signals, the Wilton compressor is expected to be operational within two years. Modelling indicates that the enhanced capacity will provide competitively priced gas from various sources, bolstering Australia’s energy security.
