J&K Government Accelerates Hydropower Projects Following Indus Water Treaty Suspension
The Jammu & Kashmir government has expedited hydropower project construction after the Centre put the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance. The installed capacity is projected to rise from 3,540 MW to 5,164 MW by December 2026 and aims for 11,000 MW by 2035. A new Hydel Policy 2025 has been proposed to enhance private sector involvement and socio-economic development.

The Jammu & Kashmir government is fast-tracking hydropower projects following the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty. Current installed capacity stands at 3,540.15 MW, expected to increase to 5,164.15 MW by December 2026 with the commissioning of two major projects.
J&K has an estimated hydropower potential of 18,000 MW, with 15,000 MW identified. A comprehensive roadmap aims to triple the capacity to 11,000 MW by 2035. The draft Hydel Policy 2025 seeks to attract private investment and enhance local socio-economic conditions.
