Johns Hopkins University Secures Approval for New Electrical Conduit in Baltimore
Baltimore's Board of Estimates has approved Johns Hopkins University’s $3.7 million project to build a new electrical conduit. This infrastructure, extending 12 city blocks, will primarily support the new Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Institute (DSAI) on the Homewood campus, while also addressing sustainability goals.

The Board of Estimates in Baltimore has given the green light to Johns Hopkins University for a $3.7 million electrical conduit project, necessary for the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Institute. The conduit will run 12 blocks from a substation, delivering 13,200 volts and aiming to decarbonize campus operations by transitioning from fossil fuels to electricity.
Construction is scheduled to begin next month, with completion anticipated by January for the conduit and summer 2027 for the substation. Despite community opposition citing potential traffic disruptions, the board approved the proposal without addressing concerns about the DSAI's power usage. The conduit will be deeded to the city post-completion, indicating a long-term urban infrastructure commitment.
