Judicial Review Denied for Wind Turbine Cable Project in North Devon
Legal attempts to halt the White Cross wind turbine cable project at Saunton Sands have concluded after a judicial review was denied. The project aims to connect a 100 MW offshore wind farm to the national grid, despite significant community opposition.
The judicial review concerning the White Cross wind turbine cable project was rejected, ending campaign efforts from Love Braunton and Save Our Sands. The planning application, approved in May 2025, allows cables to come ashore at Saunton Sands, traveling underground for 8 km to connect to a new substation at East Yelland.
Opponents raised concerns about potential harm to the Braunton Burrows UNESCO biosphere reserve and local tourism. The project is positioned as vital for advancing offshore wind technology in the UK, aiming to power 135,000 homes. Despite the setback, community groups plan to continue monitoring compliance with planning conditions, reflecting broader tensions between renewable energy initiatives and community conservation efforts.
