Kashmir Saffron Growers Advocate for Solar Pumps to Activate Defunct Irrigation Systems

FLOW CONTROL

Saffron growers in Kashmir's Pampore belt are advocating for solar pumps to revitalize the non-functional sprinkler irrigation system under the National Saffron Mission, aimed at rejuvenating 3,715 hectares of land. Although 124 boreholes were installed, only eight are operational.

Farmers report a drop in saffron production from 5 kg per hectare in 2000 to 1.5 kg this year. They cite high maintenance costs and untimely rainfall as contributing factors to declining yields. The agriculture department's production data indicates fluctuating outputs, with 19.58 metric tonnes projected for 2024-2025.
